Magnesium has a reputation for helping with relaxation and sleep, but my experience has been quite the opposite. Typically, anything over 100 mg—especially magnesium glycinate—gives me insomnia. This happens because magnesium can increase neuronal excitability in some people, leading to a restless night instead of a restful one.
Recently, I was making a magnesium oil spray intended to soothe muscles and joints. In a twist of fate, I poured the rest of the mixture over my hand and down the sink. To my surprise, I felt incredibly sleepy afterward! This accidental finding was a revelation: while high doses of oral magnesium may keep me awake, the topical application made me drowsy.
